She is breathing through a stretched red veil. The lips part beneath the weave, the fabric dips at the mouth, and the whole face, wrapped tight as a second skin, goes on performing the small mechanical acts of staying alive. Wrinkles stream back across the cheek where the fabric was pulled and knotted. Sunglasses have been set over the sheath, black-browed, businesslike; behind her a swimming-pool sky stays flat, blank as a backdrop can be.

Fashion knew long before its critics that a covered face is more arresting than a bare one. Concealment is the oldest seduction, and this picture practices it without apology: features filed down to relief, identity reduced to its pressure points, beauty administered until it verges on anonymity. Note where the picture allows a face to survive: at her throat, a small gold Medusa stares out from its black medallion, the one countenance in the frame permitted to be seen. The woman is veiled; the emblem is not. Every luxury image tells you what it worships.

Yeste, Barcelona-born and a fixture of Numéro, Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue, works in an elemental register, fire, sand, water, and here the element is heat itself: red pulled over a body like temperature made wearable, in a city built against the sun. The photograph is both advertisement and admonition, which is what the best fashion pictures have always been. On the wall it radiates; the blue keeps it honest. Whether you read it as glamour or as warning will say more about you than about her.
