I confess the little booth holds me before anything else does: a glass box of electric light set down on scrub grass beside Route 6, its red TELEPHONE lettering the one hot note in a scene otherwise cooling toward night. It is a chapel of the ordinary.
Around it the Roseville Cottages settle into evening. Their yellow clapboard has gone warm and papery; behind the panes, lamps have been switched on, so that each little house leaks a domestic gold. A rounded old car waits in the sandy yard, a blue-tarped boat leans against a wall, a dune rises behind. The hand-lettered sign gives the proprietors’ names, Mart and Ozzie Rose, and a telephone number, and it is this stray particular, two people I will never meet, that quietly unfastens the composure of the whole.
Meyerowitz made this at the hour photographers call the blue moment, when daylight and the first electric lights weigh equally, and only the patient eight-by-ten view camera of Cape Light could register both the fading sky and the neon on a single sheet.
