Changing-room light is the weakest light in sport: dim, brownish, used up, and it sets the terms here. The exposure asked for more stillness than a boxer could give it, so the man arrives as a long smear of pale flesh, while everything that keeps still stays sharp: the dark grid of lockers, the stencilled numbers, the padlocks hanging from their hasps, a dark coat slumped high in the corner like a spectator.
He is all motion and no identity: bare back, dark trunks, one pale sock swinging through the bottom of the frame. He might be shadowboxing; he might be fighting his way out of a shirt. The blur declines to settle it, and the refusal is worth more than sharpness would be, since it keeps him in the middle of doing rather than done. Around him the numbers climb, 53 to 76, a bureaucracy of small doors; scraps of paper lie about the floor, the litter of an ordinary session.
This is from Neutral Corner, the boxing series Masats made as part of the AFAL generation that dragged Spanish photography into modernity from the late 1950s, work that helped earn him the Premio Nacional de Fotografía in 2004. The print is gelatin silver, made later from the original negative, and it keeps faith with the conditions: grain, warmth, blur, all preserved as the picture’s grammar rather than corrected as its faults. Photography has always done its best thinking in poor light; this frame, half ghost, half ledger, is one of the proofs.
