The dizzying spiral printed on the bikini belongs to a specific chapter of the last century, the moment when optical art leapt from the gallery wall onto swimsuits, shift dresses and record sleeves, and geometry briefly became glamour. Yeste borrows that era’s hypnotic vocabulary and stages it in deep black and white. One woman sits upright in a swirl-patterned top and striped briefs, a headwrap coiled above her level gaze; a second reclines across the foreground, eyes closed, close-cropped, her long body catching the single hard light.

An optical pattern is a machine for holding the eye, and we should notice how efficiently it works on us here, pulling the gaze to the spinning discs at the seated woman’s breast before we grant either sitter a face. The old suspicion applies: the image seduces first and asks questions later. Yet the picture is not merely decorative. It sets a wide-awake, appraising stare against a sleeping one, consciousness against surrender, and lets the graphic dazzle carry a quieter drama of two women sharing the same pool of light.

The two are Binta and Joan, arranged by Txema Yeste, who belongs to the front rank of Spanish fashion photographers and has worked across Numéro, Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue, forever tilting the editorial toward something more elemental and staged. Issued as a black-and-white archival pigment print, the sheet turns the spiral crisp and the dark skin to a warm, burnished grey against the shadowed floor. The photograph knows exactly how it charms us, and that self-knowledge is what separates a seductive picture from a merely pretty one.
