She steps out of the century of high collars and mourning cloth, the era when women in buttoned black stood for portraits they would wait days to see, and she does it under a blue that no such age ever printed. Between the dark shafts of the pines, the lake lies almost turquoise, the mountains bare and modern; only she insists on another time. Her black gown climbs to the chin, swells at the shoulder, falls without event to the ground. Fashion, here, is not novelty; it is haunting.

I confess where my eye goes: not first to her face, though that face, powdered to a lunar pallor, floats above the dress like something lit from within. It goes to the low corner of the frame, to the sawn stump among the living trunks, blunt, mute, the one tree that will not grow. The composition is perfectly composed; the stump is what trembles in it. Then the bow knotted wide at her waist: a soft concession inside all that severity. A photograph becomes intimate exactly there, where its order admits a flaw.

The title says Boumort, and the land answers: a rim of mountains, a lake gone cold turquoise, pines like the bars of a gate. The photographer, born in Barcelona and long at the front rank of Spanish fashion photography, keeps an elemental habit, water, wind, dark cloth, and here it serves him as a whole wardrobe. In this archival pigment print the blue holds its chill and the blacks their depth; she can go on standing there, between two centuries, in shadow, facing us.
