An eye at extreme magnification, filling the frame, lit from one side so the far lid is in warm shadow. The iris is green at the rim and turns to gold spokes around the pupil. The upper lashes are heavy with mascara and separate into wet-looking points; the lower lashes are bare, fine, brownish. Along the waterline there is a thin gleam. On the skin of the lid, individual fine hairs catch the light. The pupil is small — the light is strong.

I am closer to this eye than I would ever be to a person's. That is what the macro lens trades in: a proximity no relation permits, offered without the awkwardness of having asked. And the thing is entirely beautiful, so the discomfort takes a moment to arrive. When it does it is not about modesty. It is that the eye has been separated from whoever is behind it. There is no face here, no expression, nothing to indicate consent or its absence.

What returns the picture to a person is the small imperfections. A lash bent the wrong way. A faint crease at the outer corner. The lower lashes are a slightly different colour from the upper ones, which have been painted. Someone is inside this, blinking, waiting for the photographer to finish. The photograph knows it and offers no more than that.
