What the frame declines to explain is the reason these bodies lie flat on the dust: whether the men are sleeping off the fair, praying, or acting out some drink-thickened dare. A candle burns in the raised hand of the boy nearest us, its flame the single certain thing in the picture, throwing a small coin of light onto his cheek and the knotted shirt bunched at his waist. Everything else is guesswork the photograph refuses to settle.

Below him a second figure has turned his face to the sky, a dark beret slipped beside his head, one hand open around another small flame. Bare feet intrude at the top edge, proof of sleepers we are not shown. Masats worked the Sanfermines less as spectacle than as aftermath, the hour when Pamplona empties of its roar and the young lie horizontal on the pavement. The candle does the lighting the night withholds, and the negative caught it whole.

This gelatin silver print, made later from the original negative, is where that fugitive flame becomes durable. Silver salts fixed the candle’s brief chemistry into something you can hold, circulate, hang. Masats belonged to the AFAL group that dragged Spanish photography out of pictorial habit in the late fifties, and the state acknowledged him with its Premio Nacional in 2004. The picture survives not as a memory of the fair but as a thing on paper, quietly insisting that a burning wick and a sleeping stranger were once here on the ground together.
