Photography never travels alone; it moves in company, and the company casts shadows. Masats builds an entire picture from that admission. Across a whitewashed wall, its lower half painted dark and running in a hard diagonal, falls a procession of blurred silhouettes — heads and shoulders in single file, the excursion of the title turned into a frieze of dark flames. The photographers themselves are kept outside the frame; only their projection is allowed in.
The wall becomes a screen, and the photograph a picture about picture-making. Whatever the excursionists came to find — the whitewash, the cobbles, the good hard light — looks back at them in the person of a boy who peers around the wall's edge, one eye cocked sideways at the camera, half hidden and wholly alert. The roles reverse with beautiful economy: the observed does the observing, and the image-hunters are reduced to weather on a wall. Long before photography grew anxious about its own apparatus, this frame had already folded the apparatus in.
Undated, printed later, the image has only gained force in transit: it now reads as an early portrait of image culture itself, the crowd that photography moves in made visible at last. And the boy keeps the question alive across the decades — who, exactly, is on excursion here?
