Everything here is the color of late honey. Two flaxen manes catch the last of the sun, the dry Sevilla grass goes tawny to the horizon, and the sky behind loosens into warm cloud. Into this amber a man in a dark green riding jacket and black Cordobés hat leans from one horse toward a woman on another, and they kiss across the narrow gap between their saddles. The chromatic key is set before any story is: gold, olive, chestnut, the single cool note of a white horse’s coat.

It is, unmistakably, a picture that has been arranged, and it wears its arrangement with confidence. The couple sit in full Andalusian riding dress; the saddles carry a monogrammed cipher; a fringed, striped blanket hangs just so against the chestnut flank. This is the romance of a place styled to the last stirrup, private feeling staged for the camera with the fluency of a fashion editorial. The kiss is real enough, but so is the direction that set two horses nose to shoulder to frame it.

The artist built half his reputation on exactly this fusion of desire and travel, carrying an American eye for glamour into other people’s landscapes and dressing them in his own longing. Here the subject is Spain at dusk, and the archival pigment print is the right vessel for it: it holds the warm register without souring, the greens deep, the manes luminous, the sky’s grain smooth. Romance, styling and place settle into a single golden surface that keeps its heat long after the light has gone.
