Nineteen sixty-four was the year the Spanish state proclaimed twenty-five years of peace, and Madrid answered the way cities under such proclamations do: with a fair. Strings of bulbs sag across the Plaza Mayor and dissolve into a long blur of stalls; a woman in houndstooth is walking out of the frame; and at the center of the noise a couple has stopped to read a small printed slip, his arm around her shoulders, their hands meeting on the paper, both heads bent as if over scripture. At the left edge a booth's lettering promises destino — destiny by the coin slot, fate as fairground merchandise.

The camera cannot tell us what the slip says — a fortune, a horoscope, a raffle number — and that withholding is the picture's intelligence. Photography traffics in surfaces; here the surface is absorption itself, two people withdrawing from the spectacle to consult a text about their future in a country whose future was not, officially, open to consultation. The fair supplies its ration of light. The couple supplies the gravity. Documentary photography at this pitch does not explain a society; it catches a society confiding in itself.

The man who made it belonged to the AFAL generation that pulled Spanish photography out of salon haze and into the street, and long before the Premio Nacional de Fotografía reached him in 2004 his images had become the memory bank of postwar Spain. In gelatin silver the bulbs burn like soft planets; the suit goes liquid black. A print of this order is a quiet object, and as loaded as the slip in the young man's hand.
