Two headlights, and the whole night arranges itself around them. They hang at the vanishing point of a wet dirt road, small and cold and doubled, the only bright thing in a scene otherwise composed almost entirely of dark, black sky, black verges, a road surface gleaming faintly where puddles catch what little light there is. Something is coming, or leaving. Hard to say which, and that is the unease of it.

I keep wanting to know who is driving, which is of course the wrong question, the question the picture refuses on purpose. What it offers instead is the primal roadside sensation, you, on foot or stalled, watching another set of lights approach through fog, stripped of everything narrative and held at the exact pitch of not-yet. The title of the series, End Sends Advance Warning, does a lot of work here, though the picture scarcely needs it.

Printed as archival pigment on aluminium, the blacks stay deep without going dead, a real trick, and the two little flares of headlight do the rest. It is minimal to the edge of nothing, a road, a fog, two dots of light, and yet it produces more dread than any staged interior could. The end, if that is what this is, keeps its distance, and keeps its promise to arrive.
