Scarcity is the whole event. A dark plain of volcanic grit fills the lower half of the frame; low barren hills roll across the middle; a grey, undifferentiated mist takes the top. There is no house, no road, no figure, only ground, horizon, and weather, arranged with a severity that borders on refusal. The eye searches for an incident and finds, at last, one small thing.

A faint pale streak, water or a trace of snow, cuts a thin diagonal across the dark earth, and it is this, the single legible mark in a field of near-nothing, that pierces the monotony and holds me. Without it the picture would be pure surface; with it, there is a wound in the ground, a place where something ran or melted, evidence of process in a scene that otherwise denies time.

Bright Black World is the aptly paradoxical title, and the image earns it: black that is somehow luminous, a darkness printed as archival pigment on aluminium until it reads as depth rather than absence. I look for meaning and the landscape returns none; I look for feeling and it returns a great deal, the melancholy of a place indifferent to whether I am here. What the photograph withholds becomes what it is about.
