Photography began with plants pressed flat: ferns and grasses laid on sensitized paper, printing themselves as pale silhouettes. This pine needle enters that lineage on its feet. Two slender pairs, knotted at a dark node, rise from a white ledge with legs planted and arms flung high, and where Talbot’s specimens surrendered their bodies to the page, this one keeps its distance from the plaster, near enough to cast a faint doubled shadow, far enough to remain a thing in the world.

The setting insists on the hand. The wall is not blank but worked, its plaster dragged in visible strokes; the ledge below carries the same white in a smoother register; and the knot at the figure’s waist is somebody’s patient tying. What the camera fixes is a sculpture built to last a few minutes, a stick figure as old as any scratched on stone, arms up in greeting or surrender. The photograph converts that brief balancing act into something that can circulate, be framed, be kept.

Yeste, a Barcelona photographer at the front rank of Spanish fashion work for Numéro, Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue, has always trafficked in elements: fire, water, sand, wind in cloth. Here the element is the humblest, a fallen needle, and the result is the more durable object: a gelatin silver print, silver suspended in gelatin the way the figure is suspended between wall and edge, mounted on aluminium Dibond so that image and support become one rigid body. A picture about standing up, given a spine of metal.
