Follow the thin seam of peach light lying along the water where the river bends, and the whole picture reorganizes around it. Everything else has surrendered to silhouette: the hills a flat black cut-out, the foreground reeds reduced to scratched dark strokes, the far bank one unbroken mass. Only that narrow reflected ribbon, and the pink flush it answers high in the sky, insists a sun is on its way. The smallest bright thing turns out to be its whole reason.

Harvey composes this as deliberately as any studio set-up, though nothing here was arranged but the standing and the waiting. The sky is graded with a designer’s care, rose at the top cooling to peach at the horizon and then to a clean pale blue, and the river lays the same sequence down as reflection, softened. Grasses cross the lower edge like fine drawn lines; a single dark shrub anchors the right. It is a picture built from restraint, colour rationed to a few degrees of warmth against a great deal of near-black.

Harvey is known for saturated, close-up colour from the gardens and interiors around Rockport, Maine, which makes this wide, hushed dawn feel like a held breath between her louder pictures. Her books and prints are collected and exhibited across American museums. The archival pigment print is what carries the difficulty here: the delicate gradient of the sky kept smooth and unbanded, the blacks of the banks held open rather than crushed, so the one warm seam on the water reads as clearly on paper as it did at the river’s edge that morning.
