She has just set the cigarette between her lips and not yet drawn on it; the tip carries the faintest ember, and the smile around it is the held expression of the second before an exhale. That suspended instant is the whole picture. Everything else, the severe blunt fringe with its twin kiss-curls at the temples, the winged white collar rising from a dark pinstriped jacket and tie, has settled into place, waiting on her breath. Meisel has caught her between decisions, amused, appraising, in no hurry to perform.

The portrait is built almost entirely in the warm low registers of a sepia-toned print. A soft vignette draws the darkness in around the shoulders so that light collects only on the brow, the lined eyes and the pale collar, and the pinstripe is felt more than read. Tonal control of this order is the point: the face emerges from near-black by gradation rather than contrast, the way a fine print holds a hundred greys between the coal of the suit and the chalk of the shirt.

Meisel, who shaped the look of Vogue Italia across a quarter-century, was a scholar of period styles, and here he dresses a woman as a Twenties dandy without letting the costume become a joke. The androgyny is elegant, the gaze modern, the reference worn lightly. Printed later as an archival pigment print, the image keeps its film-era warmth and the slow tonal falloff that lends the sitter her gravity. What remains is less a fashion photograph than a character, poised at the edge of a gesture she has decided, for now, to withhold.
