What is burning behind these trees? Nothing, and someone: a hidden lamp, headlights on a farm road, an arrival I am not shown. The bare branches take the gold all the same, lit from below like actors before a black house, and the fog climbs through them, carrying light into a sky the color of wet charcoal. In front, nothing mystical: a plowed road, ridges of dirty snow, the scattered clods of a winter that must be pushed aside daily so that life can continue.

It is this collision that holds me: revelation above, chores below. The tire tracks curve off at the left; someone has driven here, turned, gone home. And still the trees stand in their borrowed fire like the burning bush of a religion no one practices anymore, message without messenger, or messenger without message. The series is titled End Sends Advance Warning. I believe it. But what tenderness, that the warning should arrive as gold light in branches, soft, almost domestic, the end announcing itself the way a porch lamp announces supper.

Hido has spent decades on such roads, mostly after dark, photographing houses that glow and highways that dissolve; SFMOMA, the Getty and the Whitney keep his nights in their collections. I am told this print is archival pigment mounted on aluminium Dibond: the night, then, as a smooth and rigid object, its blacks held fast to metal. This pleases me obscurely, that so unlocatable a light should be given an edge, a weight, a place on a wall where it can go on not explaining itself.
